Why Hardwood Flooring Needs a Vacation Before It Moves Into Your House

Hardwood flooring in a modern kitchen

Have you ever noticed how people move to the High Country for “the fresh mountain air”…

…then spend the first two weeks adjusting because they’re not used to the elevation?

Believe it or not…

Your hardwood flooring feels the same way.

No, it doesn’t ask for sweet tea or a rocking chair.

But it does need time to get comfortable.

And if you rush it…

Well…

That’s when expensive things start happening.

Hardwood Isn’t Dead…It’s Just Sleeping

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:

“It’s wood. Cut it. Install it. Done.”

Not quite.

Hardwood is still a natural product. Even after it’s milled, finished, boxed, and shipped across the country, it continues to react to moisture in the air.

Think of it like a sponge.

When moisture increases, wood expands.

When moisture decreases, wood shrinks.

That’s completely normal.

The trick is making sure it reaches equilibrium with your home before installation begins.

Here’s Where Many Installations Go Wrong

The flooring may have been stored in:

  • a warehouse in Georgia
  • a trucking terminal in Tennessee
  • a distribution center in Charlotte

…before arriving at your house in Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, or West Jefferson.

Those places all have different humidity levels.

If we nail the flooring down immediately, the wood is still trying to become accustomed to your home’s environment.

That’s when you start seeing:

  • Gaps between boards
  • Crowning
  • Cupping
  • Buckling
  • Squeaks
  • Boards pushing against each other

None of those are fun.

My Moisture Meter Is One Of My Favorite Tools

People expect installers to show up carrying saws and nail guns.

I do.

But one of my favorite tools doesn’t make any noise.

It’s my moisture meter.

Before I install hardwood flooring, I take moisture readings from both:

  • The hardwood flooring
  • The wood subfloor

The goal is for the two readings to be close enough that the flooring has adapted to its new home.

As a general guideline, many manufacturers recommend the moisture content of the hardwood be within about 2–4 percentage points of the wood subfloor, depending on the width of the flooring. For many common solid hardwood installations, a difference of no more than 4% for narrower boards (under 3”) and 2% for wider boards (3” and wider) is recommended. I like to verify we’re well within those manufacturer guidelines before moving forward.

That simple step can prevent thousands of dollars in future problems.

Sometimes I Deliver Hardwood Days Before Installation

Every now and then a customer says:

“David…why are you bringing flooring over if you’re not installing it today?”

Great question.

Because the wood needs time to relax.

I want it sitting inside the home’s normal living conditions with the HVAC running.

It needs to get comfortable before we ask it to spend the next 50 years living there.

Think of it as letting your new neighbor unpack before asking him to help move your couch.

Cheap Installations Are Fast.

Quality Installations Are Patient.

I’ve been installing flooring since 1988.

One thing I’ve learned is this:

The customer usually remembers the finished floor…

They rarely remember the installer waiting three extra days.

But those three days may be exactly why that floor still looks beautiful twenty years later.

Sometimes doing nothing…

is actually doing the most important part of the job.

Why Oliver Flooring Takes the Extra Time

At Oliver Flooring, we’re not interested in simply installing hardwood.

We’re interested in installing it the right way.

That means:

  • Checking moisture levels
  • Allowing proper acclimation
  • Following manufacturer guidelines
  • Making sure your investment lasts for decades

Anyone can install a floor.

Not everyone protects it before the first board is nailed down.

If you’re considering hardwood flooring in Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Seven Devils, West Jefferson, Linville, Newland, or the surrounding High Country, we’d love to help you do it right the first time.

Because beautiful floors aren’t created by rushing… they’re created by respecting the wood.
